The story

An American Gothic about sisters, secrets, murder, and magic. Montgomery, Alabama, 1955. Ruby is a sensual hoodoo practitioner who has lost her magic. Netta is her devout, newly engaged play-sister with aspirations of climbing the social ladder. As the historic bus boycott ignites around them, these sisters have their bond tested by infidelities, grief, and crises of faith. But when a murder brings a mysterious stranger to town, Netta and Ru find themselves caught between personal discovery and the urgency of the movement.

“Excellent craft and storytelling, gripping characters artfully portrayed, and every twist caught me totally and delightfully by surprise.”
