The story

STUPID FUCKING BIRD is a hilariously irreverent remix of the classic play that stages a timeless battle between young and old, past and present, in search of the true meaning of it all. An aspiring young director rampages against the art created by his mother’s generation. A young actress wrestles with an aging Hollywood star for the affections of a renowned novelist. And everyone discovers just how astounding love, art, and growing up can be.

Be ready for anything in this trailblazing adaptation full of original songs and witty banter. This season opener will tickle, tantalize, and invite you to consider how art and love fuel our pursuit of happiness.

“Aaron Posner’s savvy, petulant blitz through Anton Chekhov’s ‘The Seagull’ [is] less an adaptation of Chekhov’s landmark drama than a funny, moving slugfest, a ripe mashup of mock and awe…sometimes it blows Chekhov up, and sometimes the play explodes with a genuinely Chekhovian release of emotion. The show is smart enough to have it both ways: It mines ‘The Seagull’ for classical heft even while giving it the bird..”

The Artists

"After seeing the Dobama Theatre production of... Aaron Posner’s 'sort of' adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s 'The Seagull,' it’ll be hard to sit through the real McCoy again. It just won’t be as fun... [a] wry, wonderful show, a roaring success to kick off the theater’s 60th season... [we] can’t look away... from Perrotta’s Emma, or this.. fine production." - Andrea Simakis The Plain Dealer

" absolutely brilliant production... There is no regard whatsoever for the fourth wall, which is exhilarating... “Stupid F**king Bird” serves up two-and-a-half hours of intelligent, well-acted, risk-taking theater guaranteed to engage and entertain. " - Bob Abelman, Cleveland Jewish News

“It's a re-imagining [of Chekhov’s ‘The Seagull’] that's hard to imagine being better handled than by the folks at Dobama, who take this wild idea and roll with it. For those looking for something fresh and different, Stupid F**king Bird promises to take its audience on a ride that they'll never f**king forget.” - Cleveland SCENE

"STUPID F**KING BIRD takes glorious flight at Dobama... must-see... Kudos to the director, technicians and actors... “Stupid F**king Bird”... gets a marvelous production under the creative mind of Dobama’s Artistic Director, Nathan Motta... The cast... each in their own way, are excellent, creating clear “real” people, nicely texturing their performances and grabbing and holding the audience’s attention. Well done!" - Roy Berko, BroadwayWorld
